Skills Portfolio
In each of the technology areas of study, the student’s specific and employability skills are evaluated and recorded each year. Upon graduation, each student is presented with a certificate of the major Technology areas in which they have studied, clearly indicating the skill level that he or she has achieved. These certificates are contained within a bound presentation portfolio.
The Skills Portfolio also includes the Ontario Secondary School Diploma or Ontario Secondary School Certificate, a copy of the student transcript, certificates of merit, Work Experience evaluations and a resume. Additional items such as special training certificates and letters of recommendation are included in the portfolio.
Since 2003, Sir Guy Carleton has issued a Skills Portfolio package to the graduating class. The presentation of the portfolio at the commencement ceremony replaced the presentation of the diploma alone.
There are six sections to the Skills Portfolio. The first contains the OSSD or OSSC and the student transcript. The skill certificates for each subject area in which the student studied are in the second section. The achieved skills and level of proficiency are listed on the back of each certificate.
The next section includes any certificates of merit awarded by the school. Graduating students receive these awards from the subject teachers at Sir Guy Carleton for special achievement.
Each student has an opportunity of participating in up to 5 two week Work Experience placements between the second and fourth year of high school. A copy of both the employer evaluation and a write-up by the Work Experience teacher are included for each placement.
A resume completed by the student is also included in the package. Additional items such as special training certificates and letters of recommendation complete the final section of the portfolio. All together there are up to 40 pages in each portfolio.
